About

Kahi-Suni is a project documenting women's stories of marriage migration. In India, women constitute the largest group of migrants, with majority of them moving from one place to another because of marriage. Despite its scale and prevalence, women's migration has largely been overlooked from the global discourse of migration and their personal stories, forgotten.

Mostly, young women in their twenties and early thirties get married and are expected to move into their husband’s home. At such a young age, women go through major social, cultural, economic and psychological changes as they adjust into a new family and locality. Many of them continuously grapple with an altered & conflicted sense of identity, home and belonging.

As young girls, we have grown up listening to stories of our mothers, grandmothers, aunts, sisters and sisters-in-law reminiscing the places they left behind and reflecting on their journeys of change and transformation. This project is an endeavour to capture and collect these stories, etching them in public memory for times to come.

It was initially created for the Gender Bender Festival 2019, organised by the Sandbox Collective and Geothe Insitut, Bangalore by artists Sneha Joshi and Ashmi Mridul.
